PHY2011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Osmotic Pressure, Lipid Bilayer, Sodium Chloride
Document Summary
Phy 2011: topic 1 cells, cell membranes & cell transport systems: why osmosis is an important basic issue in physiology and medicine. As you recall from lecture 2 in this topic, osmosis is the special term given to the diffusion of water. This makes the topic of osmosis a particularly important one for basic physiology since even small changes in the distribution of water between intracellular and extracellular compartments can then have a dramatic effect on cellular function. Hence in this lecture we will be studying this topic. This study will be reinforced in the practical classes, where the first class is about exactly this issue the consequences to cellular integrity of water movement into or out of the cell. So with this background let"s go on to consider the topic of osmosis. After that we"ll consider a corollary concept, tonicity: osmosis, water movement and osmotic pressure.
