Document Summary

Three types of muscles: skeletal, cardiac, smooth. Act in diff ways the role of the nerves in controlling muscle function differs for each type. Mechanisms used by nerves to control the muscles differ in their details. Skeletal muscles: highly specialised -maximises efficiency of transport: one ap in neuron = one ap in skeletal muscles, not true in cardiac or smooth muscles, a number of motor neurons control each group of fibres. Nerve ending loses myelin sheath and branches into several fine terminals. Synapses lie in muscle groove improved transmission from nerve to muscle. Post synaptic membrane is folded in sub-neural folds to increase surface area for receptors: follows all five rules for chemical transmission, transmitter. Acetyl-coenzyme a (accoa) produced in mitochondria and released to cytoplasm. Accoa combines with choline to produce ach stored in vesicles. Choline is reabsorbed, using na+ exchange pump: post-synaptic effects.
