Occurs during development in the fetal ovary. Oogonium goes under mitosis before birth, arrested in prophase 1. Polar body gets rid of extra chromosomes. What is a follicle: basic unit of female reproduction, compromises: Antral cavity fills with fluid needed for ovulation. Theca cells flat cells that surround granulosa cells. Follicular development throughout the lifespan: ovarian reserve = no more follicles/oocytes can be developed. 7 million oocytes in foetal ovary but born with 1 million. Going from a primary to secondary follicle can take 3 cycles or 3 months. Can see follicles at all different stages if we look in an ovary. Pre-ovulatory follicle is large compared to primary follicle large amount of growth has to occur. Primordial follicle development: complex process, some will never get recruited. In each cycle some get recruited and go on to form primary follicles. Primary follicle: small primary follicle, large primary follicle, epithelial cells have proliferated + have many layers.
