Disinfection: aims to remove/destroy pathogenic microorganisms (no longer able to pass on an infection) dec # Prerequisite: should reliably disinfect in short-time, broad spectrum, well tolerated on skin, mucous membrane and wounds, not toxic after being absorbed, no bad odour, not being inactivated by wound exudates, body fluids, blood etc. Main uses: dec levels of microorganisms on the skin + mucous membrane (by dec # allows immune system to then take over). Normally, these membranes are host to a large number of usually harmless microorganisms. Hand washing (chlorhexidine gluconate and povidone iodine solutions), pre-op skin disinfetion. Hydrogen peroxide (h2o2): short term action, broken to h2o + o2, 3% solution for wound disinfection. Organic disinfectant agents: alcohols (inc bactericidal potency methanol- propenol: need to contain water). K-permanganate (kmno4): oxidising agent w disinfectant, deodorising and astringent properties.
