PAC3421 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Asthma
Inhaled route (such as ICS) – Advantages:
-quick onset of action – get total dose, higher in situ drug conc than oral and parenteral routes – good
systemic absorption -> however systemic side effects
Considerations before changing Rx
– check compliance w/ existing therapies – inhaler technique – try to identify + eliminate trigger factors
-can’t check lung function as children haven’t fully developed yet!!
Compliance: can be checked through patient self-reporting, refill data, reliever : preventer use
-can be improved through reminders, routines, edu
Written asthma plan:
-self-management - wallet-sized card/paper sheet -> written
-used to recognise and respond to worsening asthma
-symptom-based or PEF reading-based (based on personal best) - individually tailored to the pattern of
asthma (Pt preferences considered)
-explained to the patient/carer
-review and update periodically
