Document Summary

Predict the possible impact of spinal cord injury on a person"s occupational performance. Name and describe 3 common secondary impairments/medical complications associated with having a spinal cord injury. Discuss the relationship between level of complete spinal cord injury, functional impairment and resulting activity limitation and associated health issues. Tetraplegia: functional impairment of arms, trunk, legs, motor and sensory impairment of cervical segments. Paraplegia: motor and sensory impairment of thoracic, lumbar and sacral spinal segments. Types of injury: complete: absence of sensory or motor function in the lowest sacral segments, incomplete: only used when there is partial preservation of sensory or motor function below the neurological level and including the sacral segment. The above is determined by the physician (doctor) by testing innervation at the lowest sacral segment (s5), including anal sensation and sphincter contraction. Doctor will use pin pricks on arms and legs to determine where the lowest neurological level of damage may be.
