OCC2014 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Traumatic Brain Injury, Midbrain, Attention
Document Summary
Describe the brain and cognitive function in brief. Describe the ot role in evaluation of ulsn. The ability to redirect thoughts and actions towards a stimulus or event for a defined period of time, despite the presence of extraneous or unrelated stimuli. A process where information is selected for further processing or discarded. Different modalities: visual attention, auditory attention, sensory attention (body percept) Anoxic damage (when brain is deprived of oxygen): exposure to toxic substances, substance abuse, cns infections. Do they have difficulty ignoring distractions (including noise, pain etc. Midbrain reticular activating system: arousal, mood, motivation, sustained attention and vigilance. Parieto-temporo-occipital area: orienting, engaging and disengaging of attention, and object recognition processes. Frontal lobes, anterior cingulate gyrus and basal ganglia: response selection and control, intentional control, active switching and inhibition and strategies for manipulating information. Right hemisphere: mediates alertness and sustained attention. Capable to detecting and interpreting full visual field and space.
