- Occupational justice
o Humans are occupational beings. Their existence depends on enablement of
diverse opportunities and resources for participation in culturally-defined and
health building occupations.
o Denial of universal access to opportunities and/or resources to participate in
culturally-defined, health building occupations is unjust.
- Occupational justice beliefs:
o Humans are occupational beings.
o Humans participate in occupations as autonomous agents.
o Occupational participation is interdependent and contextual.
o Occupational participation is a determinant of health and quality of life.
- Principles of occupational justice:
o Empowerment comes through engagement in occupation.
o Inclusive classifications of occupations full spectrum of opportunities.
o Enablement of occupational potential.
o Diversity, inclusion, and shared advantage in occupational participation.
- Occupational determinants
o Structural factors:
Type of economy.
Regional/national international policies.
Values underlying policy.
Cultural values.
o Contextual factors:
Individual, group or community characteristics that mediate the effect
of occupational determinants and forms on outcomes.
Characteristics are given meaning by the individual (e.g. age, gender,
sexual preference, disability etc.)
- Occupational performance issues:
o Definition: an actual or potential issue or problem in the ability to choose,
organise, and satisfactorily perform meaningful occupations.
- Possible outcomes of Occupational Risk Factors and Injustices
o Occupational imbalance: imbalance involves a state that occurs because
people’s engagement in occupation fails to meet their unique physical, social,
mental, or rest needs and allows insufficient time for their own occupational
interests and growth as well as for the occupation each feels obliged to
undertake to meet family, social and community commitments.
o Occupational deprivation: a state of prolonged preclusion from engagement
in occupations of necessity and/or meaning due to factors which stand
outside of the control of the individual.
