MGC1010 Week 9 - The Changing Concept of Careers
● Relatively new topic - but MUST be considered due to current evolution of career
● Must recognise the individuals self-directives, need for direction, link of career goals
to productivity, individual career paths etc
● Changes in career concept = pinned to environmental factors: globalisation, cultural
changes, technological effects etc
● In Australia - grads must deal with a portfolio of work instead of a single trajectory of
a career
● On average one place of employment is 3-4 years
● Recognise the dynamic nature of the workforce
○ Can have small firms with autonomy or large firms with mundane repetitive
tasks as start job for example

● The pattern of work-related experiences that span across the course of a person’s life
● Importance? - ⅓ of someone’s day is spent at work on average
Career Management
● Lifelong process of learning about self, jobs, organisations, and career goals
● Need to consider how much training should be invested into each worker
○ Consider how long they are planning to stay at the job
○ Must understand employee’s career goals
Why the need to understand careers?
● Proactive planning for changing environment
○ Deciding how to manage employees based on their potential, career goals etc
● Understanding the lived experiences of employees and colleagues
○ Capabilities formed by experiences
● Financial benefits for the organisation
○ Makes sense to invest in employees who plan to stay in the field
Occupational Choices - Holland’s Six Types
● Holland concluded that there are six types of personalities that dictate the types of
occupations we will be drawn towards
● Holland contended that there are six types of personalities, and that each personality is
characterised by a set of interests and values
● Assumptions:
○ People choose occupations that match own personalities
○ Influences such as social class, parents’ occupations, economic conditions and
geography not considered
