Infertility: has been estimated that 1 in 6 couple will have fertility problems. Definition: inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months unprotected intercourse. Natural conception fertility rate (20% cycles result in pregnancy) Primary: difficulty conceiving for a couple who have not had baby before. Secondary: inability to become pregnant again when the same partners have had a baby before. Sperm production: genetics, infection, lifestyle, medications klinefelters syndrome. Age (females: decline in egg numbers (fetus: 6-8m, birth: 1-2m, puberty: 400,000, uterine factors (reduction in blood flow, loss of hormone receptors) Increased chromosomal abnormalities in sperm: gradual decline in testosterone, decreased sperm quality (conc. , motility, morphology)
