ATS3407 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Mirror Stage, Umwelt, Jacques Lacan

48 views3 pages
Lacan says that the function of imagos is to Ǯestablish a relationship between an
organism and its realityǯ in other words Innenwelt and the Umwelt. (Which in
translation means the inside world and the outside world)
Lacan says that at the beginning for every human this relationship is not well
established because of the Ǯmalaise and motor uncoordinationǯ humans experience
prior to birth.
ǮThe objective notions of the anatomical incompleteness of the pyramidal tracts and of
certain humoral residues of the maternal organism in the newborn confirms my view
that we find in man a veritable specific prematurity of birth.ǯ
Dzfetalizationdz - continuation into extrauterine life of characteristics of fetal existence.
Ǯwill lead us to regard as the intra-organic mirror.ǯ This process Ǯprojects the
individualǯs formation into historyǯ
Ǯthe mirror stage is a drama whose internal pressure pushes precipitously from
insufficiency to anticipation- and, for the subject caught up in the lure of spatial
identification, turns out fantasies that proceed from a fragmented image of the body to
what I will call an Dzorthopaedicdz form of its totality- and to the finally donned armour
of an alienating identity that will mark his entire mental development with its rigid
structure.ǯ Lacan refers to the mirror stage as the Ǯdramaǯ because it is also an
emotional process. During the mirror stage one goes from feeling inferior to eventually
changing that. One that is confused about identification has dreams about literal body
parts. Alienating identity affects badly on entire mental development.
DzThus, the shattering of the Innenwelt to Umwelt circle gives rise to an inexhaustible
squaring of the egoǯs auditsǯ - When inside world stops being and becomes reality thats
when the ego is formed.
ǮThe fragmented body is regularly manifested in dreams when the movement of
analysis reaches a certain level of aggressive disintegration of the individualǯ.
Disconnected limbs, organs, growing wings are the hysteric fantasies that people
experiencing schizoid and spasmodic symptoms have.
DzThe I formation is symbolised in dreams by a fortified camp, or even a stadium-
distributing between the arena within its walls and its outer border of gravel-pits and
marshes, two opposed fields of battle where the subject bogs down in his quest for the
proud, remote inner castle whose form symbolises the id.dz
DzFortified structures constructed- metaphors for which arise spontaneously, deriving
from subjectǯs symptoms , designate mechanisms of obsessive neurosis: inversion,
isolation, reduplication, undoing what has been done, displacement.dz
Presented hypothesis grounded in a confluence of objective data, a method of symbolic
reduction.
