ATS1281 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Frank Tannenbaum, Labeling Theory, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
Consensus theorists: values are held in common in a society, dominant values are agreed upon by society"s members. Conflict theorists: political interests come first and interests precede values. The interest of wealth for state or business is not representative of common interests, but rather such wealth serves those powerful. We label some behaviours as good or appropriate or deviant or criminal . Criminal and deviant may be that based off of context. How people interpret and define their social reality and the meaning that is attached to it in the process of interacting with one another. How people view a things- there are different ways. There is no single action that is particularly deviant. Deviance is socially constructed through reaction instead of action. Focuses on society"s reactions to the deviant behaviour rather than the underlying behaviour itself. Centre on the social reaction to a particular individual.
