Learning objectives: to understand the concept of star schema, to be able to create a data warehousing model using star schema, to understand the concept of fact and dimension. A data modeling technique used to map multidimensional decision support data into a relational database. The star schema represents data using a central table known as a fact table in a 1:m relationship with one or more dimension tables. Facts are numeric measurements (values) that represent a specific business aspect or activity: eg. sales figures are numeric measures that represent product or service sales, facts commonly used in business analysis include units, costs, prices and revenues. Fact table: contains facts that are linked through their dimensions. In a dw, the star schema table that contains facts inked and classified through their common dimensions. Is in a 1-to-many relationship with each associated dimension table. Metrics: are computed or derived facts at run time, as opposed to stored facts.
