conversation, verbal, non-verbal, public relations, listen in order to communicate,
miscommunication due to language barriers, transmission of knowledge
- How would you define communication?
- A means of transferring meaningful information to another being
- Any forms of means that allows one to transfer and transmit information to another place
- Oxford English Dictionary definition; The transmission or exchange of information,
knowledge, or ideas, by means of speech, writing, mechanical or electronic media, etc.; (occas.) an
instance of this.
- A sharing of elements of behaviour or modes of life (Cherry 1996, p. 12).
Cross cultural vs Intercultural communication
- Cross cultural communication: comparison of communication practices of one
language/cultural group with another
- Intercultural communication: communication between speakers from different
language/cultural backgrounds
What is an 'international' language?
- Can be context dependent
- An international (world) language is one that is spoken internationally and is learned and
spoken by a large number of people as a second language. A world language is characterized not
only by the total number of speakers (native and second language speakers), but also by its
geographical distribution, as well as use in international organizations and diplomatic relations.
- Chinese is the most widely spoken language, followed by Spanish and then English
