ECE4084 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Transmission Electron Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope, Microscopy
Document Summary
History of cell science and the tools of. There are three strands of cell biology - cytology, biochemistry and genetics - which were considered quite distinct areas for a while until woven together to form modern cell biology. They are the smallest structural units that possess and exhibit the basic characteristics of life. There are four major cell types - epithelial, fibroblasts, myocytes and neurons. In cell biology, measurements are made in micrometers (microns ( m) - 10-6m). The naked eye can only see down to 10-4m. There are three main parameters in microscopy - magnification (ratio of an objects image size to its real size), resolution (clarity of the image; minimum distance two dots can be separated but still distinguished as two dots) and contrast. There are different forms of microscopy: microscopy is limited to the shortest wavelength of light: light microscopy: can see down to 10-7m.
