DEV2011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Cerebral Palsy, Polymerization, Carbohydrate Metabolism
Document Summary
Processes required during development: cell-cell communication, cell shape changes, cell movement, cell proliferation, cell death (apoptosis) Lecture 2 - cells (the basic building blocks of all living things) Cell theory: all organisms are composed of cells, cells is the basic unit of life, cells are produced by the division of pre-existing cells. Reasons to why we are made of individual cells: efficiency - inc sa - allows for sufficient nutrition and oxygen supply and waste removal, specialisation - diff cells have diff functions. Acts as a barrier which is selectively permeable. Receptors on cell surface can communicate with signals from outside the cell. Phospholipid bilayer, proteins and macromolecules embedded within. Location of many complex cellular chemical reactions and metabolic pathways. Biosynthesis of sugars, fatty acids and amino acids. Esp in muscle, sperm tail, renal tubular cells. Sperm too small and cannot fit mt. Has some control over cell cycle and growth. Synthesis and metabolism of steroids and lipids.
