BMA1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Integumentary System, Dermis, Keratinocyte
Document Summary
Bma1011- week 3: describe the cellular and tissue organisations of the body and explain their importance in relation to the integumentary system. Explain how the skin functions to protects us, detect sensory information and regulate temperature. Interestingly, in addition to vitamin d, enzymes in the epidermis can "disarm" cancer-causing chemicals and activate some steroid hormones, including those that act as anti-inflammatory agents, protecting us from diseases. Blood reservoir: the blood supply in the dermis can hold anywhere from 5 - 10% of the body"s entire blood volume. It is also important to mention that the blood vessels in the skin also provide the skin with oxygen and nutrients as well as waste removal. Excretion (and absorption: the body is able to excrete (remove) a limited amount of nitrogenous wastes (ammonia, urea) in sweat, and profuse sweating leads to the loss of salts and water. These will need to be replenished to ensure that the body stays hydrated.
