BMS1062 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Ribosomal Rna, Sigma Factor, Cytosol
Document Summary
Lecture 5 : gene expression, dna -> rna -> protein. Objectives: describe the basic process of transcription understand the selective and variable nature of gene expression describe eukaryotic gene structure understand the impact that eukaryotic gene structure and cellular organisation has on transcription. Transcription and translation are the means by which cells read out, or express the genetic info in their genes. Only particular parts of the genome are transcripted at any given time, these parts of the genome are called genes. Because many identical rna copies can be made from the same gene, each rna molecule can direct the synthesis of many identical protein molecules. Reminder rna are transient information carriers, while dna are information archives. Of dna - whether the top or bottom strand become the template strand depeonds on the orientation of the promoter region. Rna synthesis / dna transcription strands of rna are synthesized via the chain elongation reaction this is facilitated by rna polymerase.
