Describe the structure and functions of the meninges, ventricles and csf. Describe the role of the blood brain barrier. Apply common anatomical terms for position and direction in the body. Consists of a 1. 3 - 1. 4 kg brain, a spinal cord and all the peripheral nerves uses up to 20% of all energy, and 25% of glucose utilization. Contains up to 100 billion neurons and up to 10 - 100 times the number of glial/support cells. Contains 100 trillion synapses ie inter-neuronal connections. Consider the nervous system of a rat, in the head lies the brain, and the spinal cord runs down inside the backbone toward the tail. The direction pointing towards the nose or beak would be the anterior or rostral direction.
