Document Summary

Identify the factors that lead to movement of ion across a membrane. Describe the factors affecting an ionic equilibrium potential. Describe the factors affecting a cell"s resting membrane potential. Apply the nernst equation and goldman equation. Describe the function of the sodium-potassium pump. Describe how selectivity and gating occur in na+ and k+ channels. Axons and dendrites are not wires unlike wiring, there is poor insulation between intra and extracellular space charge is carried by ions instead of free electrons substrate is cytosol instead of metal. Note : ions do not simply diffuse down the axon, there is an interaction between the intra and extracellular space ie : there is a voltage difference between inside and outside, referred to as the membrane potential. Changes in membrane potential are what propagate down the axon. Again ions do not just diffuse down the axon.
