Spoken language is the primary data of linguistics. We have to have some way of representing such data on paper. It is not ideal to do this using the alphabet of which we are accustomed to (i. e. trying to spell out" the sounds of words through the english alphabet etc) Novelists and other writers of english have often attended to represent different accents (or sounds) Referring to the two different recordings of two different british accents reading out the same dialogue (devon vs. liverpool) E. g. the vowels, and the type of r" used.
