Document Summary
Tanis city in north east corner of nile delta. Strategic location enabled access to trading patterns of the near east through overland routes and provided access into open waters of mediterranean (access to trading patterns) Region occupied from new kingdom period onwards, but tanis as a city came to prominence during tim (1069 664 bce) Tanis served as royal residence for 21st and 22nd dynasty rulers, continued to be occupied into late period. Motivation create a thebes of the north (a city that would rival religious capital in the. South that the northern kings of the tim had restricted access to: tanis in history & archaeology. Sources knowledge originally gained from ancient egyptian written sources (indicate the site was founded before the tim, recorded in classical sources and has some biblical associations) Archaeological recording - 18th & 19th ce tanis visited by european archaeologists documents, maps and visual records kept. 20th ce thorough investigation by french mission.
