Week 6 australia, the environment and climate change. Traditional aboriginal fire management to remove bushfire fuel (gumtree spreads its seed through fire need to control it though), encourages growth/re-growth, provides food for humans and animals, promotes biodiversity. When the europeans came over, their practises caused a lot of damage to the land. Indigenous people maintained the land for thousands of years (goes against principle of terra nullius, that they weren"t using the land) Burn thicker areas creating grasslands = open spaces for animals to be able to hunt in these areas, then the indigenous people could hunt the animals in these areas. Being retaught now as an alternative way of managing the land. Terra nullius is a developmental argument > you"re not using the land so we will". Ore > steel, oil > exhaust gas, forest > resources necessarily entails destruction (rist, 2008). Australia has lots of resources so they can use them for their benefit and to develop.
