Doctrine of terra nullius (founding principle of australia) britain had the right to settle on unoccupied/unsettled land without forming treaties with indigenous people. > incorrect in the case of australia: it may have seemed like the indigenous people weren"t using the land but they had their own connections to it. Originally australia was wanted by the british as a convict settlement and to expand their empire. The french landed shortly after but never established a settlement. Initially, the first fleet arrivals were regularly on the brink of starvation. The principles australia was built on were quite different to british principles. Original social divisions between officers vs. convicts and free settlers vs. convicts.
