What does attention act upon: space, assumes attention acts upon space, what"s important is perceptual space, e. g, spotlight theory, feature integration theory, alternate, attention acts on objects in space, not space itself, object based theory. Rock & gutman 1981: used overlapping figures, participants had to ignore one and attend to only one of them, rate them on how aesthetic one was. Effects of an occluding bar (moore, yantis, vaughn 1998: added a bar across, added more depth, same results. Neuroimaging evidence fmri used: showed photos of houses and faced superimposed. Visual neglect: control of attention involves balance of, top down, bottom up systems, damage to right parietal lobe, damage to attention in left space. Attention and visual pathways: two pathways for processing visual information, dorsal pathway, leads to parietal lobe, motion, spatial location, ventral pathway, leads to temporal lobe, form, colour.
