PSYC10004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Fluid And Crystallized Intelligence, Theory Of Multiple Intelligences, Heredity

MBB2 Week 2; Lecture 6 Notes
Psychometric Approach to Understanding Children’s Abilities
- WISC-III intelligence test not as extensively used - due to cultural bias, scoring errors (not
standardised)
- number of changes to WISC-IV test
- fluid reasoning is better assessed
- perceptual reasoning index - takes away reliance of speed (PRI is NOT processing speed)
- new content eliminating racial bias, updated items, updated norms (IQ increases every decade,
need to update the norm), simplified instructions and teaching efforts
- stability of IQ scores
- scores are stable from 5yrs onwards
- correlated from 5yrs to 15yrs but have an average change
- could be influenced by characteristics of children and parents
- IQ = predicts success in multiple fields, correlates positively & strongly w grades + motivation,
mental health, good environment = contributes to success as well
- children’s development of intelligence = different environments + their own contribution to their
own development
- 50% of variation in IQ - genetic variation
- genetic contribution/environment contribution - more in older children
- older you get - the more active engagement in chosen environment - gets closer to genetic
potential
- IQ of adopted children = correlate to biological parents as get older
- brain connections correlate with heredity - stronger influence as ppl get older
- gender in intelligence
- small differences between boys and girls
- girls = better in writing, perceptual speed and verbal fluency
- boys = visual-spatial processing, science, math problem solving
- similarities > differences
- differences - biological? (stronger brain areas) or social messages, “gender-appropriate” -
cultural messages

Document Summary
Wisc-iii intelligence test not as extensively used - due to cultural bias, scoring errors (not standardised) Perceptual reasoning index - takes away reliance of speed (pri is not processing speed) New content eliminating racial bias, updated items, updated norms (iq increases every decade, need to update the norm), simplified instructions and teaching efforts. Correlated from 5yrs to 15yrs but have an average change. Could be influenced by characteristics of children and parents. Iq = predicts success in multiple fields, correlates positively & strongly w grades + motivation, mental health, good environment = contributes to success as well. Children"s development of intelligence = different environments + their own contribution to their own development. 50% of variation in iq - genetic variation. Genetic contribution/environment contribution - more in older children. Older you get - the more active engagement in chosen environment - gets closer to genetic potential. Iq of adopted children = correlate to biological parents as get older.
