* blood pressure needs to be maintained in the body within a narrow range. If pressure becomes too low it can result in passing out because we need adequate blood moving around the body to nourish brain and body, but if blood pressure gets too high there is a risk of stroke etc. Cardiac output - how much and how hard the heart is pumping blood into the system. Total peripheral resistance - how much constriction/resistance there is in the system. The more we increase the resistance, the greater the blood pressure. * the heart source of energy actively pumping blood through the system. * elastic tissue elastic tissue in artery when the heart squeezes blood into the artery, the artery expands with its elastic tissue and then recoils to propel the blood forward. * systolic blood pressure the maximum pressure exerted in arteries when blood is ejected into them during systole (heart contracting phase)
