MGMT10002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Reinforcement, Trait Theory, Peer Support
Document Summary
Leadership is the ability to influence people towards the attainment of organisational goals. Leaders involved with others in achievement of goals. Utilise a mobility of "power" qualities to motivate followers. It all depends on a number of factors. Personality, social, physical, intellectual or other personal characteristics differentiate leaders from non-leaders. Attempt to create a benchmark for selection of future leaders. Still considers earlier work but places more emphasis on: Traits are better predictors of the appearance or leadership than of effective leadership. Traits keep popping up don"t know which traits are fundamental. Limited scope for training idea that you"re "born with it" See leadership not as a set of traits with which people are endowed but as a set/style of behaviours that help others perform a task and reach their goal. Demonstrating concern/respect and care for wellbeing of others. Only intervene if followers fall behind performance goals. Obtains agreement from followers on what must be done.
