Germ-line mutation: can be passed on to future generations. Note that half of the affected individual"s gametes have the mutation. Somatic mutation: cannot be passed on to future generations. Size of affected patch will depend on timing of mutation - earlier the mutations, larger the patch. An individual with genotypically different somatic regions is a genetic mosaic. Mutation is the source of all new genetic variation. Mutation rates are low - of itself, cannot explain high allele frequencies. Mutation rates are low but genomes and populations are large, so lots of mutations are observed if we consider the whole genome.
