BIOM30001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Tissue Engineering, Biomaterial, Biocompatibility
Document Summary
Lecture 14 tissue engineering novel biomaterials. Hurdles for te success: technical very tricky, commercial very expensive, regulatory can"t go treating patients with a therapy if its not approved. Tissue components: cells cell speci city is vital, matrix microenvironment that the cells respond to, blood supply important, oxygen and nutrients. We forgot about the blood supply component in the past put cells + gfs into patient but this is an over-simpli cation of te because without the oxygen and nutrients from blood supply, that tissue will die. Some key challenges: blood supply for 3d vascularised tissues, suitable biomimetic matrix materials, delivery of biological signals, infection control. Tailored design of systems for tissue engineering. Potential problems include foreign body reaction, acid release, toxicity, supply, cost and reproducibility: lack of knowledge of design criteria, lack of predictability of in vivo behaviour and responses.
