The 26s proteosome in protein degradation & muscle atrophy: * the proteasome is part of the ubiquitin proteasome system. The proteasome is the polypeptides that do the work. Ubiquitin is a tag you stick on a protein you want to get rid of and that takes it to the correct location which is the proteasome. * the process of ubiquitination precedes almost all degradation by the ups (ubiquitin proteasome system) So, the substrate is a protein that you want to get rid of. It is tagged with a small peptide called ubiquitin. There are three different enzymes named e1, e2 & e3 and with the help of atp, a polyubiquitin tag is put onto the protein at a particular point (generally speaking it is 5 ubiquitin molecules, but there are exceptions). * regulation of gene transcription by degradation of transcription factors.
