X-rays of 6 year old boy and adult child has open growth plates (femoral capital epiphysis) Sometimes hard to tell whether femur is in acetabulum draw line through shaft and should go through acetabulum, also obturator foramen arch shuld be continuous with neck of femur (frog-leg) All children at birth are tested for congenital ddh if yes have splint to hold legs in frog shape to correct it (von rosin splint). In extreme cases have to cut the bone and rejoin in the right place. Adults with untreated bilateral ddh have a wide waddling gait, need to have dual hip reconstruction. Sciatic nerve is vulnerable can stretch/damage common fibular and tibial which may lead to foot drop. Physis in head of femur blocks lateral circumflex artery so blood supply to this part comes from ligamentum teres artery. Blood supply throughout femur head varies greatly from infancy to adulthood.
