Transition from lumbar lordosis to sacral kyphosis
•
IV disc wider at anterior end (wedge shaped)
•
Anterior longitudinal ligament
•
Iliolumbar ligaments: transverse process L5 to iliac crest
•
Lumbosacral ligaments: transverse process L5 to sacrum
•
L5 superior articular facet is medially oriented (to take a laterally oriented facet), but inferior
articular facet oriented antero-laterally to resist anterior shear
•
Important joint for transferring weight
•
Between auricular surface of ilium (blue) with auricular surface of sacrum
•
Early in life the surfaces are smooth and lined with cartilage, but later they develop rugosities
to form an interlocking joint (synovial joint anteriorly)
•
Iliac tuberosity (green) connected to sacral tuberosity via sacroiliac (interosseous) ligaments
(fibrous syndesmosis joint posteriorly) - important for stability, one of the strongest ligaments
in the body
•
Anterior/posterior sacroiliac ligaments
○
Accessory ligaments: iliolumbar, sacrotuberous, sacrospinous (stop excessive forward tilt
of sacrum, are origin of gluteus maximus and fixators, create greater/lesser sciatic
foramina)
○
Other ligaments provide passive support

Document Summary
Secondary cartilaginous iv joint (fibrocartilage sandwiched between hyaline cartilage on articular surfaces) Sacroiliac synovial joint b/w auricular surface of sacrum and ilium. Fibrocartilaginous joint (tiny disc) b/w sacrum and coccyx. Iv disc wider at anterior end (wedge shaped) Iliolumbar ligaments: transverse process l5 to iliac crest. L5 superior articular facet is medially oriented (to take a laterally oriented facet), but inferior articular facet oriented antero-laterally to resist anterior shear. Between auricular surface of ilium (blue) with auricular surface of sacrum. Early in life the surfaces are smooth and lined with cartilage, but later they develop rugosities to form an interlocking joint (synovial joint anteriorly) Iliac tuberosity (green) connected to sacral tuberosity via sacroiliac (interosseous) ligaments (fibrous syndesmosis joint posteriorly) - important for stability, one of the strongest ligaments in the body. Accessory ligaments: iliolumbar, sacrotuberous, sacrospinous (stop excessive forward tilt of sacrum, are origin of gluteus maximus and fixators, create greater/lesser sciatic foramina)
