Limb buds out from region of body cavity wall, taking nerve supply with it
•
Nerve supply of upper/lower limbs derived from ventral rami supplying the level of the wall of
the cavity from which the limbs bud
•
Upper limb buds from wall of body cavity that has ventral rami of C5-T1 - nerve plexus that
develops and supplies upper limb is brachial plexus and the contributing ventral rami are C5-

(motor and sensory)
•
5 Roots: C5-T1
•
3 Trunks: superior (C5-6), middle (C7), inferior (C8, T1)
•
2 Divisions: anterior (supply flexor muscles and overlying skin), posterior (supply extensor
muscles and overlying skin)
•
Lateral: anterior divisions of superior/middle trunk
○
Medial: anterior division of inferior trunk
○
Posterior: all posterior divisions (gives rise to all terminal branches supplying extensor
compartment)
○
3 cords: lateral, medial, posterior - within axilla, in relation to axillary artery
•
Lateral limb pierces coracobrachialis: musculocutaneous nerve
▪
Middle limb has lateral and medial roots of the median nerve
▪
Medial limb is ulnar nerve
▪
M shape from lateral/medial cords
○
2 branches of posterior cord: axillary and radial nerves
○
5 Terminal branches
•
Roots and trunks are supraclavicular/within the neck
•
Divisions are behind clavicle

Document Summary
Spinal nerve formed by union of ventral/dorsal spinal roots. Dorsal ramus goes posteriorly to supply overlying muscle+skin. Ventral ramus (thoracic region) goes anteriorly into body cavity. Limb buds out from region of body cavity wall, taking nerve supply with it. Nerve supply of upper/lower limbs derived from ventral rami supplying the level of the wall of the cavity from which the limbs bud. Upper limb buds from wall of body cavity that has ventral rami of c5-t1 - nerve plexus that develops and supplies upper limb is brachial plexus and the contributing ventral rami are c5- Abnormal: prefixed brachial plexus (c4-c8), postfixed brachial plexus (c6-t2) Need to know how to draw, as well as roots of each terminal branch, pathway, distribution (motor and sensory) 3 trunks: superior (c5-6), middle (c7), inferior (c8, t1) 2 divisions: anterior (supply flexor muscles and overlying skin), posterior (supply extensor muscles and overlying skin)
