Types of variables: we have different kinds of variables. Use numeric-type data: numbers only entered the dataset. Categorical variables: coded and entered the data as coded values. We tell the stats program (e. g. strata) what the coding scheme is. Exception: if need to store text data in our dataset. Storing data: storing data in a database: think about type of data entered (what kinds of characters are entered in the cells) Numeric: the data entered is in the form of numeric characters only. String: data entered can be anything (a string of characters: need numeric-type data to perform statistical analyses, even qualitative data will be entered as numeric: each category coded and assigned a number.
