Food we eat contains a variety of nutrients used for building new body tissues and repairing body tissues. Converts food into molecules that are small enough to enter body cells. What is digestion: digestion = apart to carry , disassembly line - extracts nutrients from food stuffs. Structures of the digestive system: gastrointestinal tract. Two groups of organs make up the digestive system. Continuous tube winds through the body from mouth. Contains food from the time it is eaten until it is digested and absorbed or eliminated anus. Teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Involves taking foods and liquids into the mouth (eating) Release of water, acid, buffers and enzymes into the lumen of the gi tract. Cells within the walls of the gi tract and accessory digestive organs: accessory digestive organs. Churning and movement of food through the gi tract.
