DTN301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Dysbiosis, Microbiota, Bacteroidetes
Document Summary
This week we are looking at the microbiome and how the bacteria of the microbiome makes up an independent, complex community influencing our health and disease risk. We will look at the functions of the microbiome, identify disease risks and potential therapies. We will evaluate the influence of the human genotype, the effect of medications on the microbiome and compare the effects of diets and nutrients on the microbiome. We will evaluate the associated health and disease risks. As you explore this topic, compare the diets and nutrients that play a role and consider how you can use this information as a nutritionist. In the early 2000"s an increase in interest took off and resulted in rapid discovery of new knowledge. Between 2005 and 2012 the number of published articles on microbiome related research increased 4 fold: we now know that our microbiome is linked to environmental factors, diet, disease and our immunity.
