Document Summary

In the gas state, there is a lot of empty space between the particles. As a result, the particles can be squeezed closer together. Gas particles are constantly moving, colliding into each other and the container walls. Gases expand to fill and take the shape of their container, and will flow. As a dispersed phase there are negligible intermolecular interactions between gas molecules. Gases have the highest kinetic energy of the 3 phases. Substances that wont mix as liquids will mix in the gas phase. Molecules move randomly in straight lines until they collide with another particle (or wall of the container in which the gas is held). Gas particles move about the entire space available. The process of one gas moving through that volume is called effusion. If more than one chemical species is present, each of those gaseous species can move through the entire volume called diffusion.
