Its function to provide information (and sometimes expert opinion) to management, for checking on progress, making future plans, or making decisions. Reports can be for internal use / audience only written for an external audience or both. Short reports keep detail to a minimum to achieve easy to read communication. Justification reports - present an idea or proposal then justify it. Progress reports - written on request or according to need to inform management of rate progress in relation to special projects. Periodic reports - provides objective information on a regular basis with respect to routine activities. Incident reports - deal with non-routine occurrences providing a factual account of the relevant event. Analytical reports - assesses a situation or problem and recommend a course of action. Submitted to aid decision making and problem solving. Opinions tend to be reserved for conclusion and recommendations.
