Historical and Scientific Perspectives of Management
Management ideas and practice throughout history
- Management practices were evident as from early as 5,000 BC
- The study of management occurred later when work and organisations changed
rapidly (with industrialisation)
Why we need managers today
- The Industrial Revolution (1750-1900) changed the structure of the work progress
- The workforce changed from small (family) units to factories which employeed many
workers
- Managers were needed to supervise and direct these workers
Stages of Industrial Revolution
- First: through the introduction of mechanical production falacities with the help of
water and steam power. First mechanical loom 1784
- Second: through the introduction of division of labour and mass production with the
help of electrical energy
- Third: through the use of electronic and IT systems that further automate production
- Fourth: through the use of cyber-physical systems
Scientific Management
- Studies and test methods to identify the best, most efficient ways

- No follow up on improvements
Frederick W. Taylor
- Frederick Taylor is known today as the father of scienctific management. One of his
many contributions to modern management is common practice of giving employees
rest breaks throughout the day.
Frederick Taylor 4 main Management Principles
1. Develop a science for each element of a mans work, which replaces the old rule-of-
thumb method
2. Scientifically select and the train, teach and develop the workman
3. Cooperate with the men to ensure all work is done in accordance with the principles
of the science
4. Divide responsibility between management and workmen to ensure there is an
almost equal division of the work and the responsibility
Time Study
- Timing how long it takes good workers to complete each part of their jobs
