Workplace Diversity and Inclusion
Key terms:
Equity: the premise that all persons have the right to benefit fairly, irrespective of
gender, race, socioeconomic background, disability and so on
Discrimination: occurs where members of one group of people are denied
opportunities to develop their capabilities and are denied equal rewards for equal
capabilities
Equal opportunity: recognizes historic and ongoing systemic discrimination in a
partiular soiet… seeks to eliminate this and to provide some way forward for
groups identified as having suffered from discrimination and disadvantage
Diversity: recognizes the values the variety of qualities possessed by people within
an organization and uses these for business advantage- but this idea is debated
Inequality in the labour market
1. Rate of unemployment/ unemployment
o Unemployment- indigenous 17.2%, Non-indigenous 5.5% (ABS, 2011)
2. Pay
o 18% pay difference between males and females (even sport prize money is
different- Wimbledon argument)
3. Segmentation
o Industry- differences between industries (mining and hospitality)
o Occupational- horizontal (gender type occupations), Vertical (glass ceiling, status
and top positions- 17.3% CEOs i Australia, ol 5% of Worlds Largest
Corporations
4. Underemployment and exclusion
o Youth unemployment 15% 2014 (3.1% in 1978)
o Women and older workers
Discrimination can occur by taking action against someone for their:
Sec/gender
Race/ nationality (Sydney Café, international students 2014)
Disability
Marital status
Parental status
Pregnancy (1 in 2 experience some form of discrimination 2014)
Religious beliefs and activities
Political beliefs and activities
Physical appearance
Trade union membership
Age (Virgin Blue 2007, Sydney bus driver, 2011)
Sexual preference
Transgender/ trans- sexuality
