WEEK 2: CATEGORIES AND CLASSES OF BUSINESS EVENTS
Business Events: any public or private activity consisting of a minimum of 15 persons with a common interest or
vocation, held in a specific venue or venues, and hosted by an organisation/s. They also have business objectives as
their main purpose.
Categorising Business Events:
• Meetings – assemblies, conferences, workshops, launches, conventions, ceremonies
• Exhibitions – trade shows, expositions, trade fairs
• Incentives – incentive travel programs, corporate hospitality activities
Conferences: meetings held for the purpose of conferring and discussing specialised topics or a range of topics
within a specialised area that are convened on a relatively ad-hoc basis and generally not repeated
Examples of Meetings:
• Meetings of executives – To discuss proposed law changes
• Meetings of associates – To consider revisions to regulations
• Rank-and-file meetings of unionists – to consider industrial action
• Gatherings of professionals – To discuss an area impacted upon by research findings
• Get-togethers of salespeople – To learn about a product/service
• Congregations of international delegates – To discuss geo- political issues such as climate change or world
trade.
Exhibitions: a category of business events involving commercial selling forums where sellers utilise display space and
directly present their products, ideas and services to buyers
Public Shows: generally based on a leisure or lifestyle subject, that are open to the general public and typically
involve an admission fee
Incentives: involving the provision of travel, entertainment or hospitality experiences designed to motivate,
recognise and/or strengthen relationships with employees, clients or other key stakeholders
