Describe three different methods of eliciting student thinking about the science concept of liquids: explanatory drawings, matching activities, kwlh/twlh. Talk like a scientist: football coach: the team has momentum wow! Scientist: an object has momentum when it has forward motion that can be calculated by multiplying mass and velocity. Scientist: you"re dissolving, the water that dorothy threw at you is a solvent and you are the solvent. Involves precise terminology, carefully constructed expressions (technical), if-then and when-then structures. Use evidence to establish points of discussion, domain-specific language and context-specific language, use listening skills. As children acquire language, they can share their experiences and ideas about how the world works. Speaking about our ideas and listening to others" perspectives changes how we construct our own meanings. In science, we have language as a learning tool, to questions, make claims, explain, predict, plan and reflect. This approach is based on the idea of students as apprentices", working alongside someone more expert.
