SLE111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Ionic Bonding, Purine, Cell Nucleus
Document Summary
Part 1: atoms, bonds & the importance of water. Elements are substances that cannot be broken down further. A compound is a substance that consist of two or more elements in a xed ratio. The major elements of life: carbon (19%, oxygen (65%, nitrogen (3%, hydrogen (10%) Ionic bonds = involves swapping of electrons between atoms. 1: covalent bonds = involves atoms sharing electrons. Water can form hydrogen bonds with compounds that have a polar solvent: cohesion = surface tension, universal solvent, moderation of temperature, water can dissociate. Expansion upon freezing = ice oats on water ph = is the measure of acidity or alkalinity. ph has the ability to alter the change and hence shape of biological molecules. The shape of a biological molecule allows it to function. Dehydration (condensation) reaction = forms polymers by covalently linking monomers. Water molecules are removed as bonds are formed. Hydrolysis reaction = forms monomers by the breaking of polymers.
