Modelling and social skills training – in social skills training, clients learn new skills by observing
and then imitating a model who performs a socially skilful behaviour.
Third-wave’ cognitive behavioural therapies – these therapies all incorporate the concept of
mindfulness as a central objective of behaviour change, and they represent the addition of humanistic
concepts and Eastern methods to behaviour therapy.
Mindfulness – a mental state of awareness, focus, openness and acceptance of immediate experience.
It also involves a non-judgemental appraisal, so that in a state of mindfulness, difficult thoughts and
feelings have much less impact.
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) – focuses on the process of mindfulness as a vehicle
for change. The ACT therapist teaches clients to ‘just notice,’ accept and embrace their thoughts and
feelings, even previously unwanted ones. The commitment part of the treatment lies in examining
one’s life, deciding what is most important to one’s true self and setting life goal in accordance with
those values. The therapist helps the client develop strategies to work towards those goals and remain
committed to them.
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) – a treatment developed specifically for the treatment of

Family therapy – focuses on the total pattern of family interactions, and they include the entire
family in treatment.
Marital therapy – distressed couples discuss their marital problems with therapist.

be language barriers. Cultural congruence – treatment that’s consistent with cultural beliefs and

Gender issues in psychotherapy – as women strive for more equal relationships with men and for
equal opportunity to develop their potential, they often meet external barriers that are deeply
embedded in their culture’s traditional sex roles and religious traditions. Feminist therapy –
