CREATING A SAFETY CULTURE.
• Maintaining safety culture: encourages people to speak up, raise concerns about quality
care, near misses, patient problems.
• Means organisation can last longer- low staff turnover, low patient/family complaints of
care, less stress staff. Happier staff=happier patients.
• If no safety culture, nobody speaks up.
• Similar to bullying- no happy culture means people are afraid to speak up about problems.
IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION IN HEALTHCARE.
• Listen to pt, they are telling you the diagnosis.
• Ensures: pt trusting relationships, positive relationships w other Drs, is pt satisfied with
diagnosis and treatment process?
• Reduces healthcare cost, reduces patient/family complaints, reduces staff turnover by
promoting positive workplace.
• Barriers: healthcare expenditure, high pt numbers (good treatment process for Dr, may
seem rushed for pt), lack time for Dr/nurses to communicate effectively with pt.
