HNN319 Chronic Illness and Supportive Care - Trimester 1, 2018
15 February 2018 Page 2 of 11
WELCOME
On behalf of the teaching team, I would like to welcome you to HNN319 Chronic Illness and Supportive Care.
This unit addresses the complexity of chronic illness and its varied impacts on the individual living with chronic illness, their
families/carers and on us, as health professionals; the impact on service delivery systems will also be explored. Due to the
pervasiveness of chronic illness, it is important that nurses are well informed about the disease processes, as well as the
many and varied adaptations that individuals undergo in order to achieve optimal quality of life while coping with an
enduring and sometimes, disabling condition.
In this unit, we explore issues such as changes to autonomy, the impact of chronic illness on decision-making processes,
whereby individuals strive to preserve self control. The experiences of grieving, loss and the impact that chronic illness has on
people's lives is also explored.
At third year level, students are expected to integrate theoretical and technical skills necessary for providing complex care
whilst responding to the person with chronic illness in a broader social context. The focus of this unit is on collaboration
between the nurse and the chronically ill person and their family to promote wellness and restore and maintain health.
If you need assistance for matters related to this unit, in the first instance please contact your tutor or post your query on the
appropriate discussion site on CloudDeakin. I am also available for consultation and can be contacted via email, or via pre-
arranged appointment. I will endeavour to respond to any query within 48 hours.
Once again, I would like to welcome you to this unit and trust that you will have an enjoyable learning experience. The unit
team is pleased to offer this unit and welcomes your feedback about its content and ways in which we can support your
learning.
This Unit Guide provides you with the key information about this Unit. For the best chance of success, you should read it
carefully and refer to it frequently throughout the trimester. Your Unit site (accessed in DeakinSync) also provides
information about your rights and responsibilities. We will assume you have read this before the Unit commences, and we
expect you to refer to it throughout the trimester.
