Empires in World History
Today we as human beings, live in what are called nation states; a system where people
whom share common identity and culture characteristics, live within a country overseen by
a single government. South Korea is a perfect example of this. However, throughout history,
ost huas didt lie ithi atio states, ut in empires. Now, an Empire is usually a
mass of people who are present with no known connection (also known as aggregates)
whom are led y hats ko as a soereig (An Emperor or Empress).
Empires have always been associated with violence, as they had to control their pupils. But,
if they wanted to remain in power for the foreseeable future, they needed to find ways to
control their people without violence. They had military power already, so they used forms
of economic and social power that would unite and divide their people. Some would
support the epire, others didt. Ad thus, poer ithi a epire as a ery
complicated operation.
Studying the British Empire
The British Empire was quite short lived, compared to other empires. After the loss of
Aeria Coloies i 13, the period as ko as the start of the Seod British
Epire, here is ast util the later ieteeth-century that the Empire began to expand
rapidly. As the empire expanded, two types of colonies were distinguished by historians.
The Settler Colonies were places where British Men and Women migrated, most with the
intention of living there permanently and making up the majority of the population. These
places include Australian and New Zealand colonies, The Cape Colony and later part of
South Africa, and Canada. Colonies of Exploration were places where raw materials were
sourced by British Merchants and employers. The British only made up a small part of the
populations in these places, though they stayed for long periods of time. These were places
like India and several African Colonies. Most of the time, these colonies shared
characteristics that blurred the difference between the two. But instead, the focus is on the
ways in which Empires would operate and what issues could have risen with populations
already living in the colonies.
Empire Today
European empires have diminished over the last sixty years, and as a result, the term
epire is o uderstood to hae a egatie akgroud. The alae of poer hast
really changed, even though the formation of our empires has been disbanded. The world
we live in now is said to be more Neo-colonial than post-imperial; meaning we use certain
aspects of control to influence the development of our nations, rather than starting a fresh
in the period after the empire has ended. The US are often accused of acting imperially,
which further pushes us to seek and understand empire history and how it can be relevant
to our world today.
