Temperature and Thermal Expansion
Temperature: The measure of how hot or cold something is.
Thermometers: Instruments designed to measure temperature. Common thermometers
used today include the liquid-in-glass type and the bimetallic strip (different rates of
expansion of two metals.
Temperature is generally measured using either the Fahrenheit or Celsius scale. To define a
temperature scale, two temperature points are chosen:
1. The freezing point of water: 0or 32.
2. The boiling point of water: 100 or 212.

Document Summary

Temperature: the measure of how hot or cold something is. Common thermometers used today include the liquid-in-glass type and the bimetallic strip (different rates of expansion of two metals. Temperature is generally measured using either the fahrenheit or celsius scale. To define a temperature scale, two temperature points are chosen: the freezing point of water: 0or 32, the boiling point of water: 100 or 212. What is this temperature on the fahrenheit scale and. It turns out that -40 is the same temperature -40. Linear expansion occurs when an object is heated. where: is the initial length. is the change in temperature. is the change in length. is the coefficient of linear expansion. On a hit day, the temperature of a 5. 0km railway line changes from 20 to 50. An ordinary glass beaker and a pyrex beaker are placed on a hot place at 200. Using the following information, explain why the glass beaker is likely to crack.
