Play will never be defined broadly or narrowly enough for everyone"s purpose (bundy, 2002). Intrinsically motivated (have to be motivated, comes from the child themselves) Internally controlled (relatively) (child has to be able to control play) Is means (process) rather than end (product) (not about the output of play, the end isn"t important, it"s about the process) Free of some of the constraints of objective reality (pretending)- transcends reality and reflects reality (has to have pretend) Play & leisure differ from other occupations: transaction or actively engaged in freely, determined by the players, we can choose to do it, no consequences. Play is only play when viewed as play by the chid him/herself. Play & technology: play increasingly virtual, reduced need to: Insular nature of technological play: communicate or negotiate, mobilise. Interact with others: tv, video, internet, computer games consumes as much time as physical activity, reduced activity --> childhood obesity --> health problems.
